General Richard Montgomery
Richard Montgomery was born on December 2, 1736 in Ireland. He later became General Richard Montgomery who was one of the highest ranked generals during the American Revolution, along with General Benedict Arnold and General George Washington. Although Montgomery was a member of parliament, he supported the colonists who wanted more political freedom and this is why he fought so bravely in the Revolutionary War. On November thirteenth Montgomery led some troops to capture Fort Montreal. In that same year, George Washington ordered Benedict Arnold to capture the Canadian city of Quebec. With around 500 casualties, and the British with around 18 casualties, the Americans were highly outnumbered. In December of 1775, during a very fierce snowstorm General Montgomery died while going to Quebec. The battle started because around 4 am in September, Montgomery fired rockets signaling that he was ready to attack the British, and the British got angry and started a war which was the Battle at Quebec. After his death others he had been fighting with went on to defeat the British at the Battle of Saratoga. One of these soldiers, James Livingston, thought so much of Montgomery that he named one of his sons after him. Montgomery died in battle for a cause he truly believed in.
